Chapter Twelve
Evie
I awoke with a start, confused when I didnât see the woods around me or hear the acceleration of an ATV engine. I blinked a few times, hoping the last scene Iâd remembered would return to me and that this was some cruel, sick joke. I tried to sit up and found myself strapped to a chair that was partially reclined. Well, shitâno joke. This didnât bode well. I tried to keep my rising panic from bubbling over as I wrestled with the restraints on my arms and legs. I just needed a little give in the leather straps, and I could wiggle my wrist freeâ
âAbout time you woke up.â
I froze at the mocking voice, the hairs on the backs of my arms standing on end. âElaine, you need to let me go.â
A moment passed, then Elaine stepped into my line of sight. There was a dark bruise on the side of her face from where Iâd clocked her, and I had to bite back a triumphant smirk that Iâd at least gotten a hit in. âYeah, I donât think so.â
I followed her hand as she reached for something and noticed the table next to me. A large camping lantern rested on top, the light casting an ominous glow over the objects strewn over the table. I must be in the room I saw earlier, the one I spotted next to the staircase. It was maddening to be so close to freedom, and yet so far away.
âHow did you get free?â I asked, suddenly remembering that Iâd left her chained to the wall in my cell.
âDonât you remember? Youâre not the first person who tried to escape.â She dug into her pocket, holding up two sets of keys in the light. Damn it. In my haste to escape, Iâd stupidly forgotten to check for any extra sets of keys on her. It should have occurred to me that she would take more precautions after her last victim escaped, but in the moment, all I could think about was getting free.
My body immediately began to tremble as I took in the bottles of ink that lined the silvery surface of the table, along with a tattoo gun. Even if I didnât want to admit it, I knew what was coming. Iâd seen the artwork on enough of Elaineâs victims to know the design she was going for. The last victim had been tattooed while she was still alive, which meant I still had time before Elaine dealt the final blow.
âI wasnât expecting you to try to escape. That was stupid of you.â Her eyes narrowed, and even in the dim light, I could see the fury in them. âThat just means Iâm going to make this tattoo extra special.â
âIâm sorry,â I said in a bare whisper. âI promise, I wonât fight you anymore. Just please, donât do this.â
She stood over me, contemplating that for a moment, then lifted her fist and connected it with the side of my face. I cried out in pain, my vision dotting with stars as tears sprung to my eyes.
